From ancient times fragrance plays a pivotal role in life. The mixing of different potions of fragrance was a favorite subject of discussion among kings and rulers. In history there are stories and myths of explorers going round the world in search of new fragrances.
Today what we call perfume is a mixture of essential oils and aromatic compounds. The odoriferous compounds that make up a perfume can be manufactured synthetically or extracted from plant or animal sources.
Depending on the concentration of the aromatic compounds, perfumes have been classified into different grades, of which the most common one is called the ‘PERFUME EXTRACT’ or simply ‘PERFUME’
The second one in the classification is ‘ESPIRIT DE PARFUM’ which has 15-30% aromatic compounds
‘EAU DE PARFUM’ is the third kind which has 10-20% of aromatic compounds, is the commonly used perfume.
‘EAU DE TOILETTE’ has 5-15% of aromatic compounds
‘EAU DE COLONE’ is a citrus type perfumes with 3-8% aromatic compounds.
Other than the above there is also ‘PERFUME MIST’, ‘SPLASH’ kind of perfumes.
In Germanyan Italian barber named Giovanni Paolo Feminis created a perfume water called Aqua Admirabilis, today best known as eau de cologne, while his nephew Johann Maria Farina (Giovanni Maria Farina) in 1732 took over the business. The fragrance is made from essences of lemon, orange, bergamot, mandarin, lime, cedar and grapefruit. Even today,Italy andFrance remain the center of the European perfume design and trade.
